From practicalities through to cultural issues, from finances to fitting in and making friends, there is so much to learn. Luckily, you will find all the basics explained in this 282 page book.

Settling in Thailand takes a broad, insightful and balanced approach – neither too cynical nor evangelical, this book sets a precedent in terms of presenting a positive but realistic and non-judgmental description of Thailand life for foreign residents.

Written by two British expats in Thailand, and with interviews with another 13 expats from around the world, you will get first-hand experience, advice and explanations of expat life in Thailand. With a combined 150 years of Thai experience this book is the ultimate guide to making sure your move and settling in Thailand goes smoothly.

What Makes it Different?

  •  Having expat interviews to give a diverse range of views about living in Thailand. As well as two authors there are interviews with 13 other expats, male and female, who are living or have lived in Thailand. They work in many different jobs and come from a range of countries. They all offer significant insight into life here.
  •  Using real life costs, examples and allowing others to give their opinions on financial matters relating to the cost of living in Thailand etc.
  • Gives fair balanced views on Thailand. We don’t pretend everything is great nor do we say things are terrible here. We give honest truths and so do our interviewees.
  • At 282 pages it has a lot of information without being a Lonely Planet style encyclopedia.

Reviews

An exhaustive review of all the pros and cons of selecting Thailand as your permanent home
Can recommend to all those planning to settle as well as experienced Thailand hands who can still learn a thing or two about surviving in this fascinating country – D.W

I loved this book. It is so helpful for any expats off to Thailand! The authors have done a great job of getting lots of different opinions from a cross section of people going to Thailand. – N.P

If you’re looking for a balanced view about how to live in Thailand long-term, you’ve found the right book. Settling in Thailand is packed with information you need to plan your move to Thailand, as well as lots of tips for expats who are already here. If you have visited Thailand as a tourist and are wondering what it takes to actually live here, you’ve come to the right place.

I agree with almost everything they say, and some parts were definitely eye-opening. For example, the authors do a good job of explaining the cost of living in different parts of Thailand and what kind of lifestyle you can expect on different salaries. The parts about learning the language and the advantages of integrating into Thai society (to various degrees) made me question my own lack of integration and have motivated me to put more effort in so I can have an even better experience living here.

If you have lived in Thailand for while, the interviews with other expats are worth the purchase price by themselves. The interviews are about half of the book. It was intriguing to read about how other people struggled when they first came to Thailand but then became successful. Hard work and understanding the culture are common factors. It was interesting to find out about people in other industries. If you’re a teacher, you probably hang out with other teachers and are curious about what it’s like for people who have other careers. You can learn about what it’s like to run your own business or change careers once you are here.

Overall, this is the best book I’ve read about living in Thailand. – John
