Wat Mahabut Temple

On the hunt for somewhere new and interesting to go I heard an epic love story about a Thai woman who died waiting for her lover to return from war. She ended up dying and her story is famous all across the land. Wat Mahabut includes a shrine for the spirit of Mae Nak. It’s a great little story and an interesting place to visit in a convenient location in Bangkok.

The temple is located on On Nut soi 7. It’s about a 15 minute walk from the BTS or a quick taxi, motorbike or songthaew ride.

The temple is pretty big and free to enter. It has some interesting structures and descriptions in Thai and English. Whilst the architecture isn’t spectacular there are still some nice photos to be had. It also feels like you’re out of the city as there are a lot of trees. There are a range of food vendors too and as it’s on the banks of khlong Ban Pa you can buy bread to feed the fish.

You’ll probably only spend an hour or so here. When I visited it was quiet with maybe only 100 people on the whole complex. There weren’t many tourists there, I perhaps only spotted another three or four foreigners.

It’s a good alternative to visiting the more commercial temples in the center of Bangkok. A lot of Thai people I spoke to seemed somewhat scared of this ghost. People do visit the shrine if they are single as it’s believed the spirit of Mae can help you find love. Like a lot of temples, people also believe it is a good source for finding winning lottery numbers. Expect the temple to be busier the day before the lottery draw.

If you find yourself with a spare afternoon or just want to visit somewhere different then you can do far worse than visiting Wat Mahabut.
